Answering the Tough Questions

Have you ever been in a situation where someone asks you a question about what you believe that kind of throws you off kilter? You know, the kind of questions that in turn cause you to think if what you believe is indeed truth? For people on the receiving end of these inquiries, the question will linger in their minds for a while and one of three things will happen: 1. they’ll dismiss the question as irrelevant to their faith and push on “blindly” believing what is true simply because that’s the way they’ve been told to believe; 2. Their faith will erode and eventually they’ll abandon what they believe simply because it doesn’t reconcile with what the question revealed; 3. They’ll investigate the question and it’s answer and arrive at a more fuller understanding of what they believe.

So why am I writing this? The truth is, Christianity in today’s society is under an incredible, increasing amount of attack on all fronts. From books like, “The God Delusion” and the rise of the “new-atheism”, the recent “The DaVinci Code” and the “documentary”, “The Lost Tomb of Jesus” aired on Discovery Channel and produced by famous filmmaker James Cameron - there is an undercurrent of anti-Christianity growing stronger and stronger through all the threads of society. With the amount of anti-Christian material out there, it is not enough for Christians to simply believe what they believe because that’s they way they’ve always been told to believe.

For instance, orthodox Christianity promotes the idea that the Bible is the inerrant, infallible, and inspired Word of God. If you are a Christian reading this, do you know why you believe that? What will you do if someone comes along and asks, “But what about the evidence that there are over 200,000 to 400,000 variants, or differences, between the handwritten manuscripts in the New Testament”?

It’s important that as Christians we avail ourselves of the opportunities to strengthen our faith by understanding why we believe what we believe - and there are many resources available to aid us in this search. I highly recommend reading the article “Preaching the Real Jesus” by Lee Strobel, and he also has an excellent website at leestrobel.com which has all kinds of resources for answring the tough questions. For defense of the belief that God created the world in 6 days and other great articles on the evidence that supports that belief in the scientific discoveries of today’s world visit, creationontheweb.com.

Here’s the point of me writing this: If you ever come across one of those tough questions posed by another person, or in something you read -hopefully your response will be to seek out an answer rather shrug it off.
